Camp Read-A-Lot
Wednesdays July 12, 19, 26, 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Students entering kindergarten through third grade are invited to participate in some fun summer activities designed to keep their reading skills sharp.
They will read great stories and even get some books to take home and keep for their own. Dramatic play, games, art, and service projects will provide opportunities for the children to build their vocabularies and expand their comprehension. We’ll also work on sight words, fluency, letters, and sounds. The program is free and will be led by teachers and trained literacy volunteers.

- Literacy is the ability to understand, evaluate, use, and engage with written text to participate in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential. When individuals learn how to read, write, do basic math, and use computers, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty, lower health care costs, find and keep sustainable employment, and ultimately change their lives. (proliteracy.org)
- 85 percent of Black, 78 percent of Hispanic and 58 percent of white 4th grade public school students were not proficient in reading in 2019. (childrensdefense.org)
- 88 percent of Black, 70 percent of Hispanic and 55 percent of white 8th grade public school students were not proficient in reading in 2019. (childrensdefense.org)
- More than 43 million adults in the United States cannot read, write, or do basic math above a third-grade level. (proliteracy.org)
If children and adults struggle to read, how will they ever read the word of God?
